"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference." –Robert Frost
This quote reminds me of myself. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. After I completed my Master's of Social Work (MSW) degree many many years ago, and took the path less traveled of becoming a personal trainer and taking steps to create my own business, there were many skeptics who said it could not be done. The fitness industry was still young and lacked professionalism. No one did "fitness" full time. However, I had made a decision: that I would use my finely honed counseling skills to help my clients live happier, healthier, more functional lives by focusing on physical, in addition to emotional, needs. I had learned through my own transformational experiences with exercise that the psychological goals we have can often be met by proxy through physical activity. I would embody the same professionalism that being a social worker requires. People said it was not possible. But it was!
